Remembering Vintage Romance-Lombard & Gable
My husband and I like old stuff, and that includes old b&w movies! This weekend we watched the 1932 comedy/romance "No Man of Her Own" with Carole Lombard and Clark Gable. We love both actors, and we've seen them in many other movies. But somehow, this was the first time seeing this movie. Now, it's one of our favorites!
It's the only movie Lombard and Gable made together! They weren't married yet, or romantically attached, but their chemistry, especially in the library scene, is super sexy and so charming! It wasn't until three years later, at a cocktail party, that they actually fell for each other. Their famous relationship was highly publicized. In 1939, during a break of the shooting of "Gone With the Wind", the couple tied the knot.
The wardrobe for "No Man of Her Own" is awesome. The silk dresses are gorgeous. But I love Carole's drop peter pan collar in this publicity photo. Lombard and Gable were said to be super fun and really in love, sweetly calling themselves "Ma" and "Pa."
It's so sad their beautiful romance ended due to a tragedy. In 1942, Carole was heading home from a cross country tour selling war bonds, when her plane crashed, killing all on board! Gable was said to be inconsolable and devastated. Shortly after, he decided to join the United States Army Air forces, as Carole had previously asked him to do. After officer training, he headed a six man motion picture unit attached to a B-17 bomb group in England. The team filmed aerial gunners in combat. Gable flew five missions himself.
In 1943 a Liberty Ship was named after Carole Lombard. Gable attended the launching of the SS Carole Lombard, January 15, 1944. It was the two year anniversary of Lombard's record breaking war bond drive. The Liberty ship aided in rescue of hundreds of survivors from sunken ships in the Pacific. Gable was married twice more. But when he died in 1960, he chose to be interred next to Lombard.

Touching post- never knew this history! We also love old B&W movies and just watched a silent flick from the 30's with Lon Chaney in it. It was rated one of the top 10 silent movies. Last week we watched 'M' with Peter Lorre, another old B&W. Happy Valentine's Day :)

So happy you stopped by. Love the Thin Man series too. Did you know Carole Lombard was married to William Powell before Clark Gable!! And, Powell lost his famous movie actress/love Jean Harlow, to a tragic death.
